
SOC CONTAINER
OPERATION
S.O.C stands for “Shipper Owned Container”, which means the container owned by the shipper, forwarder or NVOCC. They only need to make a booking, and in this case, the quote will not include fees related to the container.
SOC container operation is not really common in Viet Nam and is mainly used for domestic goods transportation. SOC container operation is especially useful if the final destination of the shipment is very far from the seaport, and it takes many days to transport the container from the seaport to the factory as well as to return the container to the shipping lines or carriers.
Pros of SOC container operation?
In general, S.O.C containers can help shippers/FWD/NVOCCs to ensure more control, flexibility and proactiveness in transporting goods.
- Supply chain control: The shipper can control the container, the quality of the container and is proactive in providing the container for packing goods. In many places, due to the imbalance between imports and exports, which makes the number of available containers scarce, using S.O.C will be more optimal than C.O.C.
- Custom Clearance Control: When a container is owned by the shipper, he has control over the custom procedures. The shipper can decide and arrange the exact clearance date thus avoiding shipping costs.
What items are suitable for SOC container operation?

The nature of the goods: In some cases, when the consignor/consignee knows that the goods need to be stored for a longer period of time, it is more cost-effective to operate the SOC container. Because if using a carrier’s container, the consignor/consignee has to pay the DEM/DET fee to the carrier when it’s overdue.

Special place of delivery: Most of the goods will be shipped to the ports of discharge, the most popular delivery destination in the world. However, some goods will be transported to special delivery destinations such as political instability areas, landlocked countries (no coastline) for example. In this case, usually, the goods must not only be transported by sea to the port of discharge (of the neighboring countries) but also have to be transported by road or rail to reach the destination of these countries. Therefore, operating SOC containers will also save the cost of trucking fees when returning the container to the shipping lines/carriers.
